History Of The Club

THE FORMATION AND BIRTH OF THE STORRINGTON SQUASH CLUB

(Written By Mrs Gerry Clarke.)

Storrington is a small, sleepy little town, nestling on the northern slopes of the South Downs in West Sussex. When this story begins in the year of 1979, it had a population of approximately 3,000, growing to 10,000 with the inclusion of the outlying villages. These figures have been steadily increasing each year and many of the local inhabitants travel daily to work in Brighton, Worthing and Horsham, and a large number also commute to London from the nearby station at Pulborough. These facts mean that there is a tremendous range of interests and talents to be found in such a small town.

One November afternoon in 1978, as a group of keen tennis players were leaving their small but flourishing club after an afternoon's sport in the wintery sunshine, the conversation turned to the remarkable growth in the popularity of the game of squash, and several of those present were bemoaning the fact that, apart from one privately owned court in the village, which was used by a few people, anyone wishing to play the game had to travel a minimum of 15 miles to either Horsham or Worthing to do so. A voice was heard to say "Why can't we have a squash club in Storrington?". From this impromptu discussion a new project was born, eventually to cost in the region of £120,000. Without knowing it, several members of this small group of people were about to embark on what turned out to be a most interesting, stimulating and dedicated period of their' lives.
