History Of The Club Three Years On (1984)

Thus the Storrington Squash Club was started, by necessity this story has to be a much edited version of all that happened. It has been in existence for three years now, and many changes have been made in that time. Flexibility of ideas seems to be an important lesson learned. There is no such thing as the ideal way to run a squash club; each one, due to its own particular situation, and the wishes of its members, must find the best way to function. Storrington- which had been set up as a member owned club, and therefore not in existence to make a-profit for shareholders, has had a healthy turnover in the make-up of committee members since the start. The system of staffing has changed: no longer is the bar run in the evenings solely by volunteers as in the first two years, there are now paid personnel in attendance for the entire opening times.

On the competitive side there are two men's teams and one for the ladies competing in the Sussex league tables, and there is a healthy junior section. Amazingly, one junior has shown such exceptional talent that last year he achieved a national rating of sixth in England in his age group!

New members join, and some old ones no longer belong, the initial enthusiasm having worn off and other interests gaining attention.

The "New Project" has now become an accepted part of Storrington, and, hopefully will survive to provide healthy sport and social activities for all those wishing to join. The job of running it is in good competent hands, and those who started it can look with justifiable pride and also with a sense of awe even at the results. They can happily say that their job is complete, and can rest on their laurels, until the next time ...........
